Corrections
In the July 7 story about the Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association and the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce joining forces, The News omitted or misprinted some information. The following is the correct information.

Summer gatherings ...
We certainly are having those incredible summer afternoons - with the light lingering far into the evening hours. And then in the morning the famous regional grayness pervades. Our memories are short, for a mere 10 days ago we did have our first "heat wave" with all the celebration and whining. The heat was intense, but ever so short as the marine air came rushing back into the region.

Summer days at the drags
Recently, I got an e-mail announcing that Pacific Raceways, out in Kent, was celebrating its 50th anniversary in business. Also, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) would be holding its Northwest Nationals at the track.

The mayor who hates cars
At first glance, the downtown-tunnel standoff between Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and virtually every other state and local elected official is fairly simple, centering on a gray area in the enabling legislation passed by Olympia last year.

NAACP must step up and renew itself locally
Last week, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) celebrated its 101st birthday with its annual convention, this year hosted in Kansas City, Mo.

McGinn and his target constituents
While Mayor Mike McGinn's Walk Bike Ride Challenge should be lauded on principle, it ignores the general population who can't easily participate.
McGinn's challenge is to have residents walk or ride a bike or bus instead of taking a car. If participants report their efforts to the city, they will be automatically entered in a drawing to win prizes such as a $1,500 electric bike and an array of gift certificates. It's a good example for our city leadership to set.

Out-of-control spending is killing our country
State Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson, D-36th District, says that wrestling with the budget in the past legislative session was the most difficult task she has experienced in Olympia. Imagine the anguish if total spending was actually cut and not increased.

They will never leave the City that Care Forgot
Watching from afar as the Gulf Coast suffers yet another devastating catastrophe, I am reminded of the two months I spent in New Orleans last year, watching the city continue to struggle for air in the lingering aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Fun Run sets great example
Saturday's Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run & Walk, Kid's Parade, sidewalk sale and community picnic were impressive affirmations of how, even as the global community expands its reach, an urban neighborhood can still maintain a sense of self.

Famous folk who crossed my path
A new friend asked me the other day how many famous people I have met during my 30-plus years behind a typewriter. It's an interesting question because I learned the hard way that in our celebrity-driven culture, everybody cares about famous people to some degree.

Warm, finally warm ...
But of course it is already TOO HOT.
As I write this, our local weather guru, Cliff Mass, has declared that this mid-week we will need fans and humor and patience because of the wilting, oppressive heat.

Ballot's workers compensation initiative too one-sided
Initiative 1082, which now has enough signatures to get on November's ballot, is complicated, but worth paying attention to especially in an economic climate that needs stimulating.

Buying good ice cream was the tipping point
I will no longer buy Dryer's Ice Cream because it has all sorts of chemicals and corn syrup in it.

The school district's lightning rod
You'd never know it from the local TV or our daily Newspaper of (Selective) Record, but a lot of people are unhappy with Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson.

Would the Garden Claw work? Yeah, right
The light from the TV filled the room. It was late, and I couldn't sleep.
"It slices, dices, chops and purees -- You can't cook without one." Right, I thought sarcastically. That's just what I need. Then I keyed the remote.

Changes ...
So quickly the gentle tenderness of spring passes, and now, on the Solstice, we have the beginnings of the tough, bright, intense, full-bodied and highly fragrant gardens of our summer months. Instead of the soft verdant lushness of our wet Spring, we have the romping exuberance of summer. Well, yes we still have to imagine all of this fullness, but we can say that our spring ephemerals have quietly gone away.

Training necessary but not sufficient
"Academies should focus on encouraging critical-thinking skills, using problem-based learning techniques more reflective of the complex nature of police work, such as changing laws, using technology and responding to crises. Today, most would agree that a police officer's duties have evolved from enforcer of laws to a problem solver in the community." S.F. Hundersmark, retired police officer and Director of Criminal Science, Indiana Institute of Technology.
