Washington schools denied Race to the Top funding
Though State Superintendent Randy Dorn decided over the weekend to provisionally adopt a national set of standards in an attempt to get up to $250 million in federal funding, the funding will not come.

Leadership appointments made at Seattle Schools
Superintendent Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson, has announced leadership appointments for the 2010-2011 school year that include three executive directors of schools, four elementary school principals and three high school principals.

Seattle Public Schools votes for levy
The Seattle School Board voted unanimously last week to place a three-year, $48.2 million supplemental operations levy before Seattle voters on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

McClure course teaches students about compassion
Students at McClure Middle School are learning firsthand what it means to show compassion in their community. Sixth-grade teacher, Bonnie Powers, designed the curriculum for a character-building course called "Appreciating Differences." She had been trained by the Spokane School District to use "Character Counts" in the classroom before coming to Seattle. The course focuses on six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. During the study of citizenship, students show compassion for others by doing 10 to 15 hours of service for the community.

Magnolia girls to dance in "Coppelia."
Two Magnolia girls will be dancing in Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of "Coppelia" which runs through June 13 at McCaw Hall. Ashley Ochsner (left) a ninth grader at Holy Names Academy and Eileen Kelly is a ninth grader at Seattle Prep.

A man among pawns
If you ever find yourself thinking that all kids do these days is text one another and play on the computer, you'd be right. But one kid who does a little of both, has left the earth's orbit when it comes to one game: Chess.
Marcell Szabo, a 9-year-old resident of Magnolia may very well be the best chess player Washingtonians will ever see. He has won tournaments locally, regionally, throughout the state and across the country. He can beat just about anybody at his age group. He can beat grown men and women. He can beat computers. He can even beat his dad, the one who, three years ago, introduced him to the game.

St. Anne grad, leaps ahead at Seattle Prep
Kate Adler, Seattle Prep freshman and St. Anne School graduate, won the 3A Washington State long jump championship at the state meet at Mt. Tahoma High School over the weekend with a personal best jump of 17 feet 6.5 inches.

Li'l debaters take to the podium
The two debate teams sat side-by-side on Saturday, waiting for the event to begin. The room was hushed; the only sound the shifting of papers as judge Aaron Fishbone readied his scorecards. Fishbone gave the signal and the first debater began to speak.

8-0 Tigers declawed in playoffs
Though the Catharine Blaine Tigers entered Thursday afternoon's play-offs with an 8-0 record, the 5-2 Hamilton Hawks nonetheless made short work of the Tigers 25-13 and 25-9 bringing the Tigers' hopes of a championship to an end.

Not everyone can handle the pressure of making the split-second call, and then accept the heckling and sighs that follow. The umpires in Queen Anne Little League not only handle the pressure of the call, but they dedicate their time to the league as volunteers.

St. Anne School Volleyball girls had an 8-0 regular season, went 4-0 in the playoffs to take the CYO 7th Grade AA Division Championship, defeating St. Mary Magdalen of Everett 2 games to 0.

Outgoing principal David Elliott asked for it and now he's got it.
Coe Elementary School is hosting "Coe's Got Talent" talent show Thursday, May 6, which will feature 32 acts, prizes and fun.
