Audience excitement was palpable at the opening of Lynn Nottage's "Ruined" at Intiman last Friday night. And small wonder. | Sorcerer fights without substance |
There are plenty of sorcerer duels in director John Turltetaub's new film "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." In a bathroom, in Chinatown, in a park. Besides sorcerer duels, nothing much else happens. And frankly they get pretty boring and repetitive. Mainly because they consist of one person throwing some sort of energy bolt at someone else and vice versa, until someone runs away. | 'Cider House Rules' revival apropos |
Revivals are rife in theater recently, often with no rhyme or reason beyond their money- making potential. An exception is Book-It Repertory Theatre's revival of "The Cider House Rules." Peter Parnell's adaptation of the John Irving novel was a groundbreaker for the theater as its first dramatization of a full-length novel and for the national critical acclaim the play garnered for Book-It from the initial 1997 production at the Seattle Rep. More praise came from a run at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. What more appropriate celebration of Book-It's 20th anniversary season than a production of the play that put them on the national theater map. Wednesday, June 16, 2010

When it comes to cinema, for some of us (not naming names here), the terms "Russian" and "lugubrious" tend to be interchangeable. So encountering a movie like "Hipsters" is either liberating or deeply unsettling to one's core values. This rollicking musical comedy, or comedy with lotsa music, is a hoot. Wednesday, June 09, 2010

| Evolution in fast pace |
Vincenzo Natali's newest film "Splice" has an interesting concept: the idea of splicing the DNA of two species to create a hybrid. It's not an impossible notion. It does fall apart in a couple of places, but Natali's execution of the film makes it worthwhile. And its complex idea is fairly easy to understand. Wednesday, June 09, 2010

Among the trio of directors crowned as Emerging Masters by the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival, Australian Ana Kokkinos' seems a mite premature. On the evidence of the three Kokkinos films I've seen - "Head On," "Blessed" and "The Book of Revelation" (not in SIFF but available at Scarecrow) - this onetime lawyer turned filmmaker is a long way off from joining the masterly company of fellow Aussie directors Jane Campion and Gillian Armstrong.
