Racers at the ready
Competitors at Saturday’s Queen Anne Cub Scouts Soapbox Derby get ready to roll. The derby, which has been losing momentum among Scout troops, is alive and well with Troop 70/72. This year featured bullet and kit cars.

Webelo Scouts Anders Charlton, David Minguez and Miles Bellamy sat in a circle nervously waiting for their second heat in thea annual Queen Anne Cub Scouts Soapbox Derby. They were arguing over the best place to put a weight on a car to make it go as fast as possible. "If we put weights on them that would just be madness," concluded Charlton excitedly.

Sex offender Cothern pleads not guilty
John Richard Cothern was arrested July 13 and charged Friday, July 16 with five counts of possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Cothern was arraigned on Monday when he pleaded not guilty. He is being held at the King County Jail on $750,000 bail and is scheduled for trial Aug. 24.

Firefighters raise $102,731 for Muscular Dystrophy Association
Seattle Firefighters were out collecting donations in their boots for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) July 15 and 16. Thanks to the many drivers who slowed to drop cash and coins in the boot, the total amount raised was $102,731.

Police Blotter 7/28
Confusion
Police responded to a reported burglary at a home located in the 2600 block of Perkins Lane West at 12:16 p.m. on July 12. The victims were two homeowners, one of which said he left the house at 8:30 a.m. and when he returned he found that the northeast bathroom window had been left ajar.
When he entered the house he found that the master bathroom had been ransacked. Taken from inside the house was approximately $5,000 in Canon camera equipment and a BOSE sound system.

Evolution Pilates, Rain Fitness, Whole Foods Interbay and Santa Cruz Organic Pink Lemonade are holding a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 31, in front of Whole Foods Interbay at 2001 15th Ave. W. The event will include an open grill lunch by Whole Foods including, Santa Cruz Organic Pink Lemonade, pink cupcakes, wine tasting, pilates prizes and rain fitness giveaways. All proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Puget Sound.

Cothern to be arraigned Monday
After being arrested July 13, John Richard Cothern, 43, was charged on Friday, July 16, with five counts of possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Cothern is currently being held at the King County Jail on $750,000 bail and is scheduled for an arraignment Monday, July 26 at 8:30 a.m. at the King County Courthouse.

Police responded to the Intiman Theatre, located in the 200 block of Mercer Street on the Seattle Center grounds, at 8 p.m. on July 1 to investigate a possible assault that had occurred between 5:10 and 5:20 p.m. earlier that evening.

Awww...Rats!
The city of Seattle started a new composting system last year, making us home to one of the most successful recycling programs in the country.
A year later, some Magnolia and Queen Anne residences believe that the combination of the new rules on composting, which allow meat and dairy in the city's food and yard waste bins, and a milder winter has contributed to an increase in our rat population.

Warehouse Burglary
On June 23 police responded to reports of a burglary at a business
located in the 3200 block of 17 Avenue West at 8:11 a.m. Upon arrival
responding officers spoke with an employee who said that when he had
arrived to work at 5:30 a.m. he noticed a few things out of place in
the office. He checked the warehouse and found more things out of
place, leading him to believe someone had broken in.
