It was fitting that the return of the all but doomed Queen Anne Farmers Market found new life during the spring.
The Queen Anne Farmers Market Association and its parent association, Queen Anne Neighbors for Responsible Growth, stuck with the market when last year's manager bailed out in February over the feasibility of the favored location at West Crockett Street.
The neighborhood organizations had preferred a Saturday event but have reverted back to Thursday and in doing so secured more vendors. But the event has lost a share of momentum and hosting on the street with traffic helpers and added signage means more expenses that will, at least in the short term, require that visitors make donations.
In spite of the task ahead, we believe the neighborhood organizations will be successful for two reasons. First, they clearly believe in what they're doing. And in business, that's half the battle. Secondly, based on sales and attendance figures, Queen Anne residents love its market and will patronize it. Residents appreciate that it's a hub for healthy food and a way to reconnect with neighbors.
The going will be tough, but Queen Anne can make it work.
