Magnolia’s Johnny Ochsner, a senior at O’Dea High School, is one of the student leaders who coordinated the “Beards for Bros” fundraising event at O’Dea. The event raised $9,100 for Seattle Children’s pediatric cancer unit.
Ochsner designed the T-shirt that the students sold, in addition to getting donations to make it possible to grow beards for the month of March.
Taking a page from the “Movember” fundraisers, in which people grow mustaches for a cause, O’Dea student leaders proposed the idea for O’Dea’s own “Beards for Bros” fundraising event. During February, students asked for sponsorships of their growing beards during a month-long fundraising period. T-shirts and wristbands were also sold to gather support. At the end of March, judges awarded prizes to the “Top Beards.” A minimum donation of $100 was required to participate in the beard-growing contest.
