Long-time Magnolia resident, Frederick G. Greaves, Jr., passed away on Monday, March 18th, 2013. Parents Frederick G. Greaves, Sr. and Ottilie and infant son, David, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne Preston Greaves; adult children: Rick (Jeannie), James (Susan), Mark, Doug, and his daughter from a previous marriage, Leslie (Max); grandchildren: Michael (Amy), David, Daniel and Ali Marie; two great-granddaughters: Ella and Anna; and other relatives and friends.
Fred was born in Tacoma and moved with his parents to Seattle where he attended grade and middle school and Lincoln High School, from which he graduated in 1941. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the Philippines during World War II. After discharge, he returned to Seattle and enrolled in the University of Washington, graduating in 1950.
Fred and wife Anne lived on Magnolia Bluff most of their married life and raised their sons there. Later, they moved to the Ida B. Culver House together, but he spent his last years at the Horizon House in Seattle, visiting Anne at the care facility where she lives. They were actively involved in the community and the life of their church, Magnolia United Church of Christ. Fred was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, an ardent Husky supporter, and also loved cheering for any Northwest sports team. An active Scouts dad, he was proud that all four sons became Eagle Scouts. He also enjoyed classic cars and car shows, and will be remembered, among other things, for his wealth of car knowledge.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1 PM at the Magnolia United Church of Christ with a gathering to follow in Pilgrim Hall.
Daddy-O will be missed by family, friends and acquaintances. He courageously faced the final days with courage, good humor and wit.
